Turkmenistan's untapped gas wealth
Turkmenistan's untapped gas wealth
Turkmenistan is sitting on one of the largest natural gas fields in the world and the country has the potential to meet energy demands from some of the world's biggest economies. But getting access to the world's fourth largest reserves, estimated at on about 25tn cubic metres, remains a major stumbling block for energy-hungry nations as it decides to do without foreign involvement. Al Jazeera's Robin Forestier-Walker reports from the Karakum desert in the Central Asian country.

Darvaza Gas Crater, Turkmenistan (1)
While drilling in 1971, Soviet geologists tapped into a cavern filled with natural gas. The ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed, leaving a large hole with a diameter of 230 feet (70m). To avoid poisonous gas discharge, it was decided to burn it off. Geologists had hoped the fire would use all the fuel in a matter of days, but the gas is still burning today -- four decades later! Locals have dubbed the cavern "The Door to Hell".

The Derweze area is rich in natural gas. While drilling in 1971 geologists accidentally found an underground cavern filled with natural gas. The ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed, leaving a large hole with a diameter of about 50-100 meters. To avoid poisonous gas discharge, it was decided to burn the gas. Geologists had hoped the fire would go out in a few days but it has been burning ever since. Locals have named the cavern The Door to Hell. Next to capturing the gas, flaring is safer and friendlier to the environment than releasing the methane into the atmosphere as methane is a relatively potent greenhouse gas with a high global warming potential of 72 (averaged over 20 years) or 25 (averaged over 100 years).

This place in (Darvaza, Turkmenistan) is called by locals "The Door to Hell". It is situated near the small town of Darvaz. The story of this place lasts already for 35 years. Once the geologists were drilling for gas.. Then suddenly during the drilling they have found an underground cavern, it was so big that all the drilling site with all the equipment and camps got deep deep under the ground. None dared to go down there because the cavern was filled with gas. So they ignited it so that no poisonous gas could come out of the hole, and since then, it's burning, already for 35 years without any pause. Nobody knows how many tons of excellent gas has been burned for all those years but it just seems to be infinite there.

Las Vegas on the Caspian?
Las Vegas on the Caspian?
The Turkmen president says it is his country's answer to Las Vegas. Using the country's copious revenues from oil and natural gas, Awaza is Turkmenistan's multi-billion-dollar beach resort project aimed at attracting foreign tourists to the Caspian Sea coast. But as Robin Forestier-Walker reports, the luxury fleet of hotels has not yet benefited ordinary Turkmens - a third of whom live in poverty.

В англоязычном мире его называют The Door to Hell - дорога в ад. По мне, так ад где-то ближе. Это самый известный кратер Дарвазы. Мало кто знает, что в округе существуют и другие картеры. Подробнее: www.otpuskrk.ru

The "Door To Hell" near Darvaza, Turkmenistan
The "Door To Hell", so called by the locals, is a MASSIVE giant crater of burning gas created 40 years ago when Soviet Geologists tapped into a cavern full of natural gas and it collapsed. Thinking it would burn out quickly, they set it on fire and it still burns to today. In April 2010, it was ordered that the hole be closed, but it still exists as of time of writing. The footage is an extract from team Don't Look Yak's Mongol Rally 2011 Adventure.

The Door to Hell
The Door to Hell
The Door to Hell, as local residents at the nearby town of Darvaza have dubbed it, is a 70 meter wide crater in Turkmenistan that has been burning continuously for 35 years. In 1971, geologists drilling for gas deposits uncovered a huge underground cavern, which caused the ground over it to collapse, taking down all their equipment and their camp with it. Since the cavern was filled poisonous gas, they dared not go down to retrieve their equipment, and to prevent the gas escaping they ignited it, hoping it would burn itself out in a couple of days. Unfortunately, there was a slight miscalculation as to the amount of gas that was trapped, and the crater continues to burn to this day. You can see it on Google Earth at 40°15′8″N 58°26′23″E
